The story of the God Akematsu and the bugs of the Shioyuki Valley

I've decided to actually start working on finishing this model. I finally have arms and legs that I'm happy with and I even got some decent hands out of the ZSpheres YAY! I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with the feet but I should get that figured out tomorrow because tomorrow's TUTORIAL DAY! Also I have a first draft of a character history of this guy YAY. I have an old book of Japanese myths and legends that I'm going to reread over the next few days to get a better idea of the writing style of old loosely translated stories about gods and mortals. Also for the moment all these names are just placeholders, I'll put some more thought into all of them when when (if?) I do a proper character sheet.

Also, I put together an album of all the WIP's of this model.

300 years ago there was the farmer Daisuke who lived on the edge of the shioyuki valley. Daisuke owned a modest piece of land and was a very diligent steward of his crops and livestock. He was also fascinated by the multitude of insects that lived in the valley and spent much time studying their interactions with his crops and livestock and the forests and plains of the valley. One day as he was making his rounds he saw a group of bandits robbing an old man. He ran to aid the old man but was quickly overpowered and knocked unconscious. The bandits quickly forgot about the old man and decided to teach the impertinent farmer a lesson by burning his farm and his crops to the ground. They ran through his fields with torches and knocked his stove over, burning all of the farmer's possessions and his livelihood.

The heat from the fire and the sting from the hot ash falling on his skin woke Daisuke, who became frantic when he saw his crops, his home, and unknown to the bandits his large collection of insects collected from the surrounding mountains and plains ablaze. He ran back to his farm to try and fight the flames but was cut down by the bandits and cast into his own burning home. The bandits laughed and watched the flames for a while then headed towards town. Once the thugs had left the old man, who was actually the God Izanagi, the third son of the God Great Showering Glory traveling the land in disguise, stepped out of the shadows and looked upon the inferno that used to be the diligent farmers livelihood and felt sad. The farmer had been a good steward of the land that Izanagi himself was very fond of and he had stood up for what was right, even though it had cost him his life.

Izanagi decided that this was all unjust so he shed his disguise and smothered the flames, then from the charred land he created an avatar and brought it to life with Daisuke's soul, which was still dwelling in the area. This avatar was the God Akematsu. Izanagi told Akematsu that the Shioyuki valley was his domain and that he was it's steward. Akematsu bowed to Izanagi then headed toward the town of Karuizawa where the bandits had gone.

Karuizawa was the largest city in the Shioyuki valley and had been very prosperous until the mayor had been killed by the Ozawa clan. Akematsu landed in the middle of town and started towards the shop where the bandits were, sending the townspeople into a panic. The bandits ran into the street to see what the commotion was and froze when they saw Akematsu. Akematsu turned toward the bandits and swung his giant sword , cleaving the street in two and killing most of the bandits. Those who survived ran to the leader of the Ozawa clan at the mayor's house and Akematsu followed them there. Akematsu swung his giant sword again and brought the mayor's house down on top of the Ozawa clan. When the dust settled Akematsu headed toward the city's largest shrine. The towns people fled in front of him but he was very careful not to destroy anything except what he thought was unjust and slowly the townspeople started to follow at a distance. When Akematsu got to the shrine the priest Kiyomori came out to meet him and the two sat on the lawn.

The God Izanagi often stopped at the shrine when he passed through the Shioyuki valley and he had stopped by and spoken with Kiyomori soon after Akematsu left the farm. Akematsu and the priest spoke for a while and Akematsu told him that the Shioyuki valley would always be safe, prosperous and fertile as long as it's people were just and fair in their conduct. The priest Kiyomori bowed to Akematsu, then Akematsu stood and left. As he walked through the city great clouds of insects gathered around him in the air and marched after him on the ground. All the insects that displeased him and made life for the people difficult were either consumed by the insects he favored as they grew to incredible sizes or turned to ash and spread by the wind, as were the spiders. Akematsu walked across the valley and flew over the mountains and disappeared into the forests beyond, leaving behind only the insects that made the people's lives joyful and their fields prosperous.

And this is why people say there are no bugs in the Shioyuki valley.

Creature feature

I went back and did a little more work on this ZSphere creature and actually looked at a bunch of pictures of wasps and beetles for reference. I'm getting an idea of what I actually want to do with it but I'm still a long way away.

Quick sketch

Did two quick anatomy studies last night, one in relief and one from ZSPheres. I'm learning how to add volume and crate shapes but I need to brush up on my anatomy and do these more often.

Shapes and Textures

Did two quick sculpts on poly planes to work with sculpting brushes, shapes, and textures. I'm developing some pretty decent workflows with these things.

Biomech Studies

I've started working on this again after months of kinda sorta thinking about it. At some point I really complicated the base mesh so I spent a night getting rid of pieces I'm not going to use and blocking in ideas for the mechanical parts that are going to attach to this. I actually pulled out the sketchbook and did a few pages of concepts for a few major engine parts before going into Maya and blocking things in.

Various pieces of an anit-gravity lifing system. All of this means something to me.

One of the anti gravity pods, these'll come in groups of 3 and 4

Main engine and a quick sketch of a plant arm to wrap around it.

Quick poly version

And here's a quick placement test to show where all the pieces are going to be.

Once I get all the exterior pieces modeled I'm going to rebuild large parts of the organic model to make it look like the mechanical elements are growing out of an organic base.

Knot

A couple times I thought I was done with the ZSpheres, and a couple times I was wrong. However, I've actually managed to simplify things and not be quite so obsessive, big step forward. Also, I'm starting to generate ideas for what to do with this thing if I ever start modeling it.

Also, here's a close-up of the dangly thing on the side.

More Knots

Spent another evening (day?) working on this and I'm almost done with the ZSpheres and ready to make a mesh out of it, only problem is that now that I've complicated the hell out of it I kinda don't know what to do to finish it up. My plan for the moment is to go down to the park by the beach and take pictures of plants with the shapes and textures that I want and use that for reference.

I'm going to start working on my inability to do simple projects.
